3rd Annual Holy Cow! Chili Cook-Off

American Lutheran Church

Adams, Nebraska

January 22, 2012

4:00 – 6:30 p.m.

You know the deal --- Let’s eat some CHILI!

To Enter: Sign up as a contestant in the Parish Hall by the bulletin board.

To Judge: That’s where the EATIN’ comes in! Just eat the chili and ‘vote’ for your favorites! Each ‘vote’ costs $1. Like more than one? Then pay to vote more than once! $1 equals 1 vote, pay heartily and vote often! (The chili is FREE, however the voting is not.) (Separate voting buckets will be set aside and numbered for each chili entrant. The bucket with the most votes at 6:00 will be determined the “American Lutheran Church Holy Cow! Chili Cook-Off Winner!” and will receive one-half of their bucket proceeds!)

The Rules: Divisions: Youth (18 and under) and Adult. There will be one overall winner, the chili that receives the most votes. Additional recognition for ‘hottest chili,’ ‘crazy (most unusual ingredients) chili’ and ‘best of show.’ Traveling trophies will be awarded. Best overall chili receives half of their ‘votes’ as their monetary award.

Contestants: Bring at least one crockpot full of your chili, your own serving utensil and any ‘unusual’ food items you’d like to serve with your chili, i.e., jalapenos, Fritos, etc. Sprinkle cheddar cheese, soup crackers and sour cream will be provided.

Back from Triennial Gathering in Spokane

R R R_
It's good to be back in Nebraska from Spokane - except for the weather.  The Triennial Gathering was an experience not soon forgotten.  Fellowship with women from around the nation, learning experiences, donationsof in-kind gifts, and challenges from our speakers were highlights from this three day event.

Now my personal challenge is to take this experience and carry it over into my daily life.  To hear Leymah Gbowee from Liberia tell how she and other women helped their country stop fighting a war and to hear of a doctor in Ethiopia tell how she helps young women in need of life altering surgery made me realize how inwardly focused I/we become.  To hear of the missions that some churches undertake makes me think of possibilities.Leymah_

In the convention prior to the Gathering, Jenny Michael from Pensacola, Florida, was elected to be churchwide President of the Women of the ELCA replacing outgoing Beth Wrenn.

I appreciate the opportunity that I've had to share my experiences with 19 women in our congregation via email.  If you'd like to hear more about my time in Spokane, please let me know.

July 14th - Updates from Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA

It's been a busy day! Registered at the Gathering this morning around 11:00 and turned in all the gifts you sent along with me. I took a tour of Camp Dianoglo which is where a lot of the action is - vendors, activities - all kinds of things going on there. I barely skimmed the surface this morning and hope to have some more time tomorrow to pick up brochures, etc.

After lunch, I took in the two film screenings - "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" and "A Walk to Beautiful". Pray the Devil Back to Hell is a documentary about what started out as a Christian Women's Initiative in Liberia to bring peace to their nation. The Muslim women joined forces with the Christian women to stage protests and sit-ins and had heavy involvement to bring peace to their nation. They also worked with United Nations forces in getting the young men of their country to turn in their guns. It was a very powerful movie and showed the power of women. I'm considering purchasing the DVD for our church.
The second movie, "A Walk to Beautiful", was equally dramatic. It's a story of young women mostly in underdeveloped countries who have had problems with childbirth that have resulted in a fistula. These young women are usually undernourished. Although they eat well, they don't consume enough calories to nourish their bodies because of the hard manual labor they are required to do. This malnourishment prevents their bodies from fully developing. One of the women was shown standing beside a white female doctor. The doctor was 5'4" tall. The young woman was probably 8 inches shorter at age 18. These women are sometimes forced to marry very young before their bodies are mature and ready for childbirth. Sometimes the babies die in their wombs and are removed in harsh ways. The women become outcasts because of the fistulas. The fistulas result in incontinence sometimes of just the bladder, sometimes the bladder and the colon. It is estimated there are 2-3 million women in the world with this condition. In Ethiopia alone there are 100,000 waiting for surgery to repair the condition. There is surgery to repair the condition in many cases, but not enough physicians in these countries to perform the surgeries.

Bishop HansenThis evening was a Meet and Greet with Bishop Hansen. It was a beautiful evening and we were on a hillside overlooking the river. I've met some wonderful women and am having a great time. Yes, I did meet and greet the Bishop. He asked where I was from and how our church was doing and said we have a good bishop. I concurred with him.

Having a great time.
Wish some of you were here with me to enjoy it!

Adams History Display during Community Days

Community Day – The Church Life Team will be hosting a display of Adams history on Community Day, August 20.  We need your help with this project.  Plans now are to have the display in the Fellowship Hall from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

We need people to assist with the display of pictures/memorabilia; people to coordinate and serve beverages and cookies (and people to provide cookies).  Your help is also needed in providing pictures and/or memorabilia for the display.  With the assistance of Byrleta Pittam and the Adams State Bank, we already have made arrangements for quite an array of pictures, but help will be needed in organizing and arranging the materials and perhaps setting up a video.

You may email Bev Buss, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or Anrea Dorn, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , if you are willing to assist in any of these ways.

Thanks in advance for your help!
