Adams American Lutheran Church
Just Desserts

IMG_0212 (Medium)
Just Desserts was an event that targeted our members of 75+ years of age.  The purpose of the event was to get the senior members of our congregation together for some fellowship and tasty desserts.

Harriet VanEngen gave the Welcome, history of Valentine’s Day, and Valentine’s Bingo

Sharon Floth played the piano with old love songs, and played “Name that Tune”

We had a printout to complete with Bible Couples to match up names…

There were 20 in attendance plus myself, Sharon and Harriet

Desserts were supplied by Christy, Harriet, Carol Buhr, Janette Buhr and Rhonda Page

Harriet and Christy setup and served everything (coffee, flavored coffee, iced tea and water)

Thank you Christy for setting up a wonderful event!

Back to Back to Back Champions! - 2012 Souper Bowl Challenge

Coach Klein wants you picnik (Medium)

Adams American Lutheran wins the 4th annual Souper Bowl challenge and has become back-to-back-to-back Souper Bowl champions!  Actually the biggest winner is the Beatrice Food Bank as the 6 churches that participated in this awesome event raised a grand total of 13,291 pounds of food which 2,703 pounds more than last year!

For those that are not aware, the Souper Bowl challenge is an event where area churches collect dry food donations over a 4 week period.  At the end of the event you sum up the total food donations and divide by the church's average attendance.  The church with the most amount of food collected per member wins!    Here is a breakdown of donations from this year's participants

chart

DSCF0415 (Medium)The Adams American Lutheran Church managed win the pounds per member challenge by raising an astounding 5,297 pounds of food which equates to over 42 pounds of food per member!  This is 1,164 pounds more than what we collected last year!  Our church was only able to amass this emense amount of food because the whole church pitched in.  The breakdown of contributions was something like this:

3rd Annual Holy Cow! Chili Cook-Off

American Lutheran Church

Adams, Nebraska

January 22, 2012

4:00 – 6:30 p.m.

You know the deal --- Let’s eat some CHILI!

To Enter: Sign up as a contestant in the Parish Hall by the bulletin board.

To Judge: That’s where the EATIN’ comes in! Just eat the chili and ‘vote’ for your favorites! Each ‘vote’ costs $1. Like more than one? Then pay to vote more than once! $1 equals 1 vote, pay heartily and vote often! (The chili is FREE, however the voting is not.) (Separate voting buckets will be set aside and numbered for each chili entrant. The bucket with the most votes at 6:00 will be determined the “American Lutheran Church Holy Cow! Chili Cook-Off Winner!” and will receive one-half of their bucket proceeds!)

The Rules: Divisions: Youth (18 and under) and Adult. There will be one overall winner, the chili that receives the most votes. Additional recognition for ‘hottest chili,’ ‘crazy (most unusual ingredients) chili’ and ‘best of show.’ Traveling trophies will be awarded. Best overall chili receives half of their ‘votes’ as their monetary award.

Contestants: Bring at least one crockpot full of your chili, your own serving utensil and any ‘unusual’ food items you’d like to serve with your chili, i.e., jalapenos, Fritos, etc. Sprinkle cheddar cheese, soup crackers and sour cream will be provided.

Back from Triennial Gathering in Spokane

R R R_
It's good to be back in Nebraska from Spokane - except for the weather.  The Triennial Gathering was an experience not soon forgotten.  Fellowship with women from around the nation, learning experiences, donationsof in-kind gifts, and challenges from our speakers were highlights from this three day event.

Now my personal challenge is to take this experience and carry it over into my daily life.  To hear Leymah Gbowee from Liberia tell how she and other women helped their country stop fighting a war and to hear of a doctor in Ethiopia tell how she helps young women in need of life altering surgery made me realize how inwardly focused I/we become.  To hear of the missions that some churches undertake makes me think of possibilities.Leymah_

In the convention prior to the Gathering, Jenny Michael from Pensacola, Florida, was elected to be churchwide President of the Women of the ELCA replacing outgoing Beth Wrenn.

I appreciate the opportunity that I've had to share my experiences with 19 women in our congregation via email.  If you'd like to hear more about my time in Spokane, please let me know.
