Christ is risen!!  He is risen indeed!!  Alleluia!!  Alleluia!!

We say these words in church on Easter Sunday and then again each week during the Easter season. We try to say them with joy and exuberance!  We want them to mean something to those who hear them.  When we cry out “He is risen indeed!” we proclaim the Good News that is in our hearts.  We find such joy in our faith that we simply can’t hold it in any longer.  We want to run out the doors of the church shouting it at the top of our lungs!  “Christ is risen!!  He is risen indeed!!  Alleluia!!  Alleluia!!”  Right?

Actually, while the words may find some energy on Sunday mornings, we find it a challenge to carry them out of the church building.  Something happens when we walk out the door and we aren’t facing an altar, surrounded by other faithful Christians.  Something happens when we find ourselves in the world, surrounded by people who are too busy to even notice that there is more to life than money, houses, cars, and jobs.

When we gather with the faithful, it gives us joy to say these words and to sing songs of praise and thanksgiving.  But it’s the ones who are mired in the bleakness of a world without God – a world without hope – who need to hear these words.  They don’t need to be shouted at, though.  Walking down the sidewalk yelling, “Christ is risen!!” is probably going to get us more troubled looks than it is joyful hearts turning to Christ.

The way we proclaim this truth in the world begins with our hands and feet.  It begins with sharing the love and hope of Christ in our actions and service to others.  The way we share the Easter message comes not in a recital of Bible verses, but in a repetition of loving actions.  We share the Easter message by sharing what God has first given us.  We volunteer our time at places where those in dire need can be fed and housed.  We offer to bring food to our local food pantries.  We collect and assemble health kits that can be sent around the world.  The Easter message is proclaimed loud and clear when we simply visit with those who are loneliest and forgotten.

Yes, we proclaim “Christ is risen!!  He is risen indeed!! Alleluia!!  Alleluia!!” but we do it with both our voices and our actions.  We do it with all our heart, strength, and soul.  Let’s truly live out the Easter message.  Make it a part of all we do – every day of the year – and it will truly be a message that is heard with joy by all that we meet.

“Christ is risen!!  He is risen indeed!! Alleluia!!  Alleluia!!”

In the name of the risen Christ,

Pastor Brink
