Our Wednesday night Lent services were a great success as we were able to hear the Gospel in different voices from different contexts. Holy Week services were well-attended and I have received several very positive comments concerning the Easter Vigil! With all that was going on surrounding Lent, Holy Week, and Easter there was still a need for Pastoral support. We held the funeral for Braxton Buhr in March—a difficult funeral for many, but a time for us to remember that God’s saving grace knows no age limit. During March, I met four times with people seeking pastoral counseling here at church, made one home visit, and took communion to Gold Crest. Upcoming dates: May 4 Affirmation of Baptism May 7 Baccalaureate May 19-23 Festival of Homiletics May 24 Wedding May 30-June1 Synod Assembly (include Sunday – Lay worship leaders) June 5-10 Vacation (includes Sunday) June 15-20 Confirmation Camp June 21-27 Confirmation Mission Trip (includes Sunday) Pastor Eric Bostrom, Campus Ministry UNL)
Also, a letter was read by a congregational member, regarding Lent Services and Holy week. It was a very positive letter Thanking pastor and everyone involved for a very uplifting time in our Easter celebration. Discussion was held concerning the events and we were grateful for the input - Thank You!!!!
Evangelism: The skating party was held on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at the Beatrice Rolla Rena. We had 55 skaters with several being guests of our congregation. The skating, the games, the devotion, and the fellowship seemed to be enjoyed by everyone in attendance. It was fun to hear people reminiscing about their earlier days when they would skate, and one man in attendance was even heard saying to his wife, “ Remind me again why we don’t do this more often.”. Several people said it was a fun time, and others said should do it again. Thanks to the members of the Evangelism Committee for the time and effort they put into this. Thanks, too, to all those who attended the skating party. Finally, thanks for the “Council Presence” and support of this event. That meant a great deal! We are planning an ice cream social in June on the west lawn of the church. Watch for more details forthcoming. Also, if you are interested in helping with this next event, please contact and Evangelism Committee member. We well begin a special project soon where items will be collected for service men and women who are currently serving in the armed forces. These people might be members of our congregation, or they may be family of members of our congregation. Watch for announcements. We have talked about other events within the community, so please watch for further details and opportunities to reach out to those who do not currently have a home congregation. Parish Ed: No Report; but was mentioned if we could get the Sunday school downstairs sooner. The teachers go to a lot of work to prepare lessons and seems as though their time is being shortened. Building & Grounds: Don mowed and fertilized the church lawn – It looks great!! There will be a sheet posted with the mowing schedule on the Entry Board. Please note your date and if you can not honor your week please contact or trade with someone. Trying to set up a time to trim trees and Pastor informed Don that the clothes dryer at the parsonage does not work. Don will report back to us. Worship: May Offering: Lisa & Brian Sound System: Dean Buhr & Lisa Buhr Announcements: Brian Johnston
Stewardship: Sandy reported committee met and had some discussion. The committee helped organize the trees that were given to the children on Sunday, April 20, 2009 to honor Earth Day. Unfinished Business: *Craig is finalizing our commitment letter for Feed the Roots *Discussion was held regarding Council Retreat *It was discovered that the copier in the SS Office does work and we will proceed with plans to sell * Still working on organizing a Chairperson for the sound system committee
New Business: Confirmation: Final letters were submitted to the council from students, they were read with some discussion. Some concerns were brought to pastor about our program and possibly how we can improve our program. We felt the students did a great job and look forward to this very special day in their Christian Journey. Motion was made by Bev & Seconded by Sandy to present these students to be confirmed. Congratulations!!!!
Communion: Lisa asked if this could be on the agenda. Not sure that it is very well received every Sunday. Mentioned if we could go back to once a month or every other week. Pastor mentioned that we have members that prefer every week. He feels if it is a concern to people they need to talk to him personally before entertaining a change.
State Fire Marshall Walk Thru: A mandatory correction is an exit door at the front of the Sanctuary that is Handicap accessible. The proposal is by the organ there is a space that meets the space needed for a door. Other recommendations but not mandatory were fire doors with panic bars, Lit exit lights, sprinkler system, modifications to the accordion curtains for fire safety, and possible modifications in the kitchen, there were more and we plan to have informative sessions to update people on these issues and maybe implement them in phases with our future improvements. It was at this point we had lengthy discussion about past and present renovation plans. We feel we need to let every one know your input is very important and we have not been very good in communicating our project phases. We are planning a meeting which will include Council and current and previous building committee people to make sure we are not duplicating previous ideas. We feel some time and effort can be saved and learn from past experience. A lot of time has already been spent coming up with workable plans we need to be sure that we are not “re-inventing the wheel” so to speak. We also talked about allowing the first 15 minutes of our Council meeting be a time designated to hear from our members.
The nominating committee will be getting together to compile nominations for the semi-annual meeting. Asst. SS, Asst. VBS, SS Treas., SS Sec., Parish Ed, and LYO Sponsors Lisa Buhr, Wes Dorn, Tammy Timms, and Dean Buhr are the members.
Corporate Resolution: Motion made by Don Parde and Seconded by Sandy Baehr that Craig Beebe acting in his capacity as President of the American Lutheran Church Council be empowered to borrow up to 150,000.00 as needed from the Adams State Bank. Funds to be deposited as needed in a separate construction checking account and used solely for Church Renovation. Vote: For 3 Against 2
